Tallinn Noir’ with its  references to ‘the noir’ and ‘Nordic Noir’ offers a new space and framework to create an audio-visual entity in a specific context with specific limits. We shall approach the territory of Tallinn with critical application of ‘the noir’ in order to explore the matter and subjects of contemporary society. ‘Tallinn Noir’ will be developed through the link to the reality, tactics of situations and everyday practices.

During the course we shall discuss the aspects of storytelling, characterisation, locale and settings, using the existing ‘street environment’ in dialogue with samples of contemporary visual culture. The method of the course is a hybrid hands-on approach to theory and practice. It consists of engaging with preselected communities and locations; quick and intense field work; group work; seminars and lectures; visits to different locations/points of interests; film projections; panel discussions and feedback sessions; artist presentations on relevant projects; socialising events in the evenings etc. Students will work in small teams of 4–5 persons. Each unit will create their own comment on the subject matter as a sequence of moving images either linear or nonlinear.
