The TELLING STORIES – Language in Video & Video as Language course focuses on the use of narration in moving images. How do contemporary video artists use narration? Which modes of story telling are available to video authors? Which part does editing play in the process of telling a story? A selection of video artists’ works will be presented to serve as examples of the various ways narration is employed in video art. Participants will have the chance to present their finished or unfinished projects and receive feedback from the lecturer and the group.
Admission is open to participants who have experience in the medium of video or film and are able to prepare a presentation of a finished or unfinished video or film project. All participants are expected to bring their own laptop.
The course will be led by Clemens Wilhelm (*1980 Berlin), a multi-media-artist based in Berlin who works mainly in video and photography. His works are shown internationally in institutions and festivals such as Centre Pompidou Paris (F), CFCCA Manchester (UK), Times Museum Guangzhou (CN), Loop Festival Barcelona (ESP), WRO 15th Media Art Biennale Wroclaw (PL), Stuttgarter Filmwinter (D), and Anthology Film Archives New York City (USA). In 2014 he won the First Prize of the Now & After Video Art Festivals Moscow for his film PETER IS DEAD. He was nominated for the Kino der Kunst Award 2013 and the Lichter Film Award 2012. He received the TATE Artist Rooms Joseph-Beuys-Scholarship (2015), the Lo Schermo dell’Arte/Visio Scholarship (2012) and the Pepinieres Europeennes Scholarship (2010-11). He was artist in residence at Organhaus Art Space Chongqing (CN), SIM Reykjavik (IS), Buitenwerkplaats Amsterdam (NL), SUMU Turku (FI), LKV Trondheim (NO), FUTURA Prague (CZ), and Timespan Helmsdale (UK).
