Course desription: This is the 5th ghostographic workshop which intends to continue on the path trail-blazed by the previous 4 sessions conducted in Montepulciano, Italy; Tallinn, Estonia; Panemunė, Lithuania and Liepaja, Latvia. It is a workshop open to all medias and focused on a conceptual development of the projects based on an open thematic framework. The key act here will be “to conceptualise” instead of “to represent”. Instead of attaching a symbolic meaning to a form and unwinding a narrative plot, we will explore conceptual spaces/traces it (the artistic “form”) creates and spins or spits off a different type of narration. And of course, we will conceptualise the representation itself (La Trahison des images) by dusting all the symbolic/moralistic meanings out of it and exposing the fundamental communicative process. Treading carefully along a narrow path between realism and surrealism we will try to investigate reality of non-real as well as the act of naming something (as real). As Sol LeWitt said “the idea becomes a machine that makes the art”, but how exactly this machine functions, what fuels it? What is the relationship, if any, between the concept (the beautiful) and the message (the good)? And what the concept or the “idea” is made of, and how does it taste? Is it representations, metaphors, connotations, denotations, symbols, meanings and etc. mashed up together, or is there a unique inner architecture of a “good concept”? Supposedly, the basic premise is clear, but still the question where to actually start looms large. Vilnius, the host city, could be a good starting point to dive into spatial, acoustic, vocal or any other local phenomena. Could you map your childhood memories onto it? Do you find familiar faces, smells, sounds, or it all seems strange? This and much more we will try to find out in Vilnius. The goal of this workshop is to initiate creative process (later on) resulting in either film, script, short story, optical or acoustic recordings, animated or performative projects among many other possible artistic embodiments.
