Course description:
The course takes place at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, accessing Jean Brown Personal Papers with the consultancy of curator Caroline Ugelstad and archivist Dorthe Håker. The institution acquired the archive in 2013, a collection that other institutions found lacking of value from a collectible and quantifiable perspective. However, bordering on the private life both of Brown and the artists that contacted her, the archive for example serves a s a document of all the mail Brown received as a collector and supporter of DADA and Fluxus related art. For example, her archive serves as a document of the international mail art-movement, and invitations to performances in the format of both gallery shows and institutional programming makes evident the recent history and possible ways to contextualize performance art today. Our group will dive into the materials and employ the archival furniture designed for Brown by the self proclaimed - but not unproblematic description - "father" of Fluxus, George Maciunas.
