Course description

This one-week workshop (November 23–26) approaches listening as a shared yet irreducibly plural experience. Through four morning sessions, students are invited into a series of listening scores—drawing on practices such as those initiated by Pauline Oliveros—as a way to explore how perception unfolds differently within a group. Hearing is understood not only as a physical process of vibration and contact, but as something that, through attention, becomes a deeper form of being touched—producing meaning, emotion, and response. Listening, in this sense, opens a space where multiple realities coexist without needing to be aligned.

Alice Chauchat will share her current research through the collective preparation of a public listening session, using the workshop as a site of shared inquiry. Her listening scores are also movement scores, so that listening and acting become intimately entangled. Listening also extends beyond sound into a synesthetic field of perception, where images, situations, or atmospheres touch us as sound does, and where movement—such as dancing—can emerge as a continuation of listening. The week culminates in a public session shaped together with the students: not as a presentation of outcomes, but as an invitation to enter a space where difference is sustained, and where listening becomes an ethical practice of attention without possession. The public session will take place at WELD on November 29th (tbc).

Teacher(s)

Alice Chauchat (FR) is a dance artist based in Berlin since 2001 and a Senior Visiting Researcher at CAPIm for the fall 2026. Collaboration has been her recurring reality - the negotiation of distance, alterity and de-centering a growing concern in her work.  Trained in Lyon and at P.A.R.T.S. Brussels, she has worked in collective and independent contexts, collaborating and performing with Jennifer Lacey, Sabine Zahn, Anne Juren, Alix Eynaudi, Frédéric Gies, Xavier Le Roy, Tino Sehgal and Juan Dominguez.  Her interest in modes of sharing—of situations, artistic responsibility, means of production and discursive tools—has led her to engage in a variety of collective initiatives. These include co-founding the open collective Praticable (2005–09), developing the online active archive everybodys toolbox (2005–13), serving as president of the artist-run PerformingArtsForum in Saint-Erme, France (2006–14), facilitating the Teachback program for dance and pedagogy research with Jennifer Lacey at ImpulsTanz, Vienna (2013–16), or accompanying the research and exchange project Nobody’s Business (2015–18) with Ellen Söderhult and Eleanor Bauer.

Since 2014, Alice has been developing Togethering, a choreographic research on the ethics of intimacy across radical difference. Using dance to activate notions such as not knowing, approximation and tending towards, the project investigates the qualities of engagement they generate. Togethering produces scores, choreographic concepts, performances and texts, and unfolds in studios, on stage, in museums and in urban space. Alice teaches regularly at HZT Berlin, DAS Choreography Amsterdam, DDSKS Copenhagen, Stockholm University of the Arts and the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Nürnberg, among others. 2010–12 she co-directed Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers with Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez and Grégory Castéra. She was a guest professor at HZT Berlin (2017–20) and JLU Giessen (2018).
