Course description:
The aim of the course is to explore differences in scenographic traditions and modes of thinking across different countries. Within the framework of the project, each national student group will create three scenographic models — one per day.
The work is based on a play divided into three parts (acts), with each part developed by a different group. In this way, one group initiates a scenographic concept, which is then continued and reinterpreted by the following group according to their own school’s methodology and artistic approach.
As a result, three distinct scenographic development scenarios of the same play are created. In total, nine models are produced — three for each scenario (representing the first, second, and third acts).
Each model is developed within a 24-hour timeframe, and the entire creation process is documented using time-lapse video.
At the end of the project, an exhibition is installed and presented, showcasing the differences in scenographic approaches. Participants gain first-hand insight into diverse principles of theatrical space-making across different countries.
The course also encourages intensive international collaboration, rapid decision-making, and the ability to adapt artistic ideas within a collective working process. Through continuous exchange between different educational approaches, participants develop a broader understanding of contemporary scenographic practices, strengthen communication and teamwork skills, and gain experience in experimental, process-based creation under limited time conditions.
Additional information: The workshop will take place in the main building of the Art Academy of Latvia at 13 Kronvalda Boulevard, Riga, in the Scenography Department facilities.
