Course description:
The workshop introduces students to the Godot game engine as a tool for creating interactive sound environments. Working with multichannel audio, external sound cards and an array of speakers, students will explore how the logic and spatial interactions of a game can be translated from the screen into physical space.
Students will learn the fundamentals of working with Godot, including character movement, world building and interactive environments. Instead of focusing on visual game design, these elements will be used to control the spatial movement and behaviour of sound across multiple speakers. The workshop explores the possibility of creating a screenless game in which navigation, orientation and interaction are experienced primarily through listening.
The course approaches the game engine from the perspective of contemporary artistic practice. The final project will be presented as a public non-visual, multichannel interactive sound experiment.
